I have always been interested in understanding, the suffering that stems from global events such as social and political issues and natural disasters. I try to understand the human condition with the emotional reactions of those caught in the crossfire. My concentration explores this through my Mexican heritage. Mexicans has always used art to express social and political injustice. Today, violence and government corruption plague Mexico. I cannot stand to see my family to live in such a situation. Many live everyday ignorant of the problems that exist outside of their personal lives. I'm aware of the drug cartels that have killed tens of thousands and the suffering that follows in the drug war. My pieces relate to the human suffering in those regions where hundreds of stories are not being told. I hope to try to bring their stories to light.
My pieces represent certain aspects of Mexican culture. I was influenced by well-known artists from Mexico such as Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente with the use of dark images and coloring to display social commentary. The pieces are rough, distorted and violent. I hope to provoke emotions of dread, misery and desperation from the viewers. I embedded spanish in some of my works to represent Mexico. The words and images are like portions of a story that build to complete the plot. It builds on the misery and the suffering of the people. Each pieces represents an aspect of Mexico. In piece (1), the eagle represents the symbol of Mexico such as the flag; its pride and strength of the people. In (7), the charred remains of a police car from an explosion. This represents how powerless the authorities are in handling the situation down there against the Cartels. In (8), the Church tells of the strong religious ties in Mexico, but as death surrounds them, the Church becomes their sanctuary. In (9), the wall represents the style of art used in the past to display frustration of the government and socio-economic injustice; murals and paintings of past Mexican artists. I see my pieces as a way to display the pain of seeing my family in Mexico live in such situations, but remain hopeful for the future.
